The desire to reduce the consumption of fuels in France made him imagine several appliances that have rendered great services: they were economical stoves, fireplaces of a new construction, stoves where the long-held smoke gave a considerable heat, stoves suitable for heating a large establishment, a large house, employing only one hearth and little fuel; ventilators intended to cool the houses with fire during the summer, traveling ovens for the armies, cylinders for heating the baths without exposing the bathers to the steam of the charcoal, etc. The necessity of demonstrating the advantages of these apparatus and of applying the theory of caloric to it, induced him to make public demonstrations of it.
